Shear Banding in a Contact Problem between Metallic Glasses

نویسندگان

چکیده

The case of a frictionless contact between spherical body and flat metallic glass is studied using mesoscopic description plasticity combined with semi-analytical the elastic deformation in geometry (code ISAAC). Plasticity described by irreversible strain rearrangements maximum deviatoric direction, above some random threshold. In absence adhesion or friction, plastic initiated below surface. To represent singularities due to adhesion, initial are forced at boundary contact. Then, structural disorder introduced two different levels: either local thresholds for residual strains. It shown that spatial organization not universal, but it very dependent on choice external loading conditions. Spatial curved shear bands may appear only specific set parameters, especially those characterizing compared externally induced gradients.

The Critical Criterion on Runaway Shear Banding in Metallic Glasses

The plastic flow of metallic glasses (MGs) in bulk is mediated by nanoscale shear bands, which is known to proceed in a stick-slip manner until reaching a transition state causing catastrophic failures. Such a slip-to-failure transition controls the plasticity of MGs and resembles many important phenomena in natural science and engineering, such as friction, lubrication and earthquake, therefor...

Shear-banding Induced Indentation Size Effect in Metallic Glasses

Shear-banding is commonly regarded as the "plasticity carrier" of metallic glasses (MGs), which usually causes severe strain localization and catastrophic failure if unhindered. However, through the use of the high-throughput dynamic nanoindentation technique, here we reveal that nano-scale shear-banding in different MGs evolves from a "distributed" fashion to a "localized" mode when the result...

Theory of Shear Banding in Metallic Glasses and Molecular Dynamics Calculations

The aged-rejuvenation-glue-liquid (ARGL) shear band model has been proposed for metallic glasses (Acta Mater. 54 (2006) 4293), based on small-scale molecular dynamics simulations up to 20,000 atoms and thermomechanical analysis. The model predicts the existence of a critical lengthscale 10 nm, above which melting could occur in shear-alienated glass. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations w...

Shear Band Formation in Bulk Metallic Glasses

In recent times, there has been a growing interest in the machining of amorphous metallic alloys, which are also called bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). These materials differ from common polycrystalline metallic alloys, because their atoms do not assemble on a crystalline lattice, and as a result, they have unique physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. A number of BMGs have been found to ...

Shear banding and flow-concentration coupling in colloidal glasses.

We report experiments on hard-sphere colloidal glasses that show a type of shear banding hitherto unobserved in soft glasses. We present a scenario that relates this to an instability due to shear-concentration coupling, a mechanism previously thought unimportant in these materials. Below a characteristic shear rate γ(c) we observe increasingly nonlinear and localized velocity profiles. We attr...
